Dear parents of the world:

Can you be understanding and supportive of your kid please?

You helped make this person. That doesn’t mean you’re gonna get to control everything they do. Hell, you won’t understand everything they do. This isn’t a bad thing; it’s a fantastic thing. It means they’re growing and becoming their own individual. It’s the duty of each generation to be more progressive and advanced than the last, and if your kid kinda freaks you out sometimes, then great!

A kid isn’t something you make so you can have a carbon copy of yourself, nor is a kid something that’s there to live the dreams you always wanted to live. Basically once you accept a child into your life, you’re accepting the responsibility of loving someone and helping them become themselves, whatever that may end up being. You can steer them away from choices that will hurt them and others - dumb stuff like drinking and driving, or becoming the kind of jerk who uses violence to solve problems - but mostly you need to let them do their own thing.

Even though you were young once too, things have changed since you were young. Sometimes they’ve changed a lot. You can always offer advice and insight, but don’t get upset if your kid says you don’t understand. Accept that maybe you don’t. If your kid says they need help with something, even if you never needed help with it - offer it. Try to look into it.

Your kid isn’t you. 

Learn when to let go, learn when to hold on. Be supportive, not controlling. Listen, don’t shout. Understand when you need help, too.

Parents, take care of your kids.
